- "Historic Past / Proud Future"
The motto "Historic Past / Proud Future" strikes me as amusing for the following reasons:
"Historic" means "belonging to the past."
"Past" means "of, having existed in, or having occurred during a time previous to the present."
So, "Historic Past" can be read as a redundancy.
"Proud" means "feeling pleasure or satisfaction over something regarded as highly honorable or creditable to oneself."
"Future" means "something that will exist or happen in time to come."
So, "Proud Future"[2] seems illogical, in that one cannot have pleasure or satisfaction over something that has yet to occur.
Ha ha! Isn't that funny!?!?

[1] I did, however, find this motto on the website of the Idaho Military History Museum.
[2] There was a typo when I originally posted this. This quote originally read "Proud Past." Ooops. Changed Aug 28 2010 6:16 p.m.
